Narrow Aisle Racking – Increasing Density

Maximise Usable Racking Space

Narrow aisle racking and very narrow aisle racking (VNA) can offer some of the same flexibility as wide aisle racking. However, by reducing aisle width and storing pallets to a greater height, storage density is increased. It still allows access to individual pallets, whilst retaining full system adjustability. Aisles can be as narrow as 1.8 metres.

Narrow aisle racking does require a specialist fork-truck, but due to the densities achieved, it can be a cost-effective investment, offset by the added value of better access and use of space. Specialist VNA trucks, often with a man-up feature can be guided in runs either by wires embedded in the floor or guidance rails at ground level. This enables them to achieve good speed in aisles, but they are designed to operate primarily in aisles. The man-up function can enhance the speed and nature of high-level picking, including individual case picks.

Bendi or Flexi-trucks can also be used in narrow aisle configurations, with aisles down as low as 1.9 metres, however, these are not guided, thus are slower and have less height capability. They do offer flexibility as a yard truck as well as an in-rack truck.

Shuttle racking system in a large warehouse

Shuttle Racking System

For clients for whom ultra-high density pallet storage is important, a shuttle racking system can be the answer. The concept is based around the fact that the forklift never enters the racking, individual pallet movements being conducted on intelligent RF guided shuttles that operate on rails millimetres below each pallet.
